Lacrosse Completes Three-Peat with 14-2 Victory over Pinnacle

The Brophy lacrosse program won its third consecutive Arizona Lacrosse League state championship with a 14-2 win over Pinnacle on Friday at Notre Dame Prep. It is the eighth state title in lacrosse in school history.

“I am extremely proud of all the hard work over the last four years,” said Pat Harbeson. “It is incredible. I have coached these seniors since they were in the sixth grade. It is special to finish off the season on this note.”

Senor Erik Volfson was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player with five goals and an assist with five groundballs. Joshua Buse scored four goals, and senior Laird Miller scored twice in the win.

Brophy (22-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the game when Matt Leightman and Eli Friedman scored. Pinnacle scored to cut the deficit to 2-1 after one period. Volfson scored three second-period goals to help the Broncos to a 5-2 lead at the half.

Buse and Volfson each scored two goals in the third, and Miller found the net in the final seconds of the period for a 10-2 lead.

Buse added two in the fourth with one from Miller, and senior Connor Rassas finished the scoring with 1:44 left.

Deion James finished off his senior campaign with 13 faceoff wins and 11 ground balls, while goalie Ryan Peitzmeier and the Broncos defense held Pinnacle scoreless over the final 30:32 of the contest.

“The defense held Pinnacle to the two goals over the final three and half quarters,” said Harbeson. “The defense won that. We struggled offensively and were not scoring—credit to Pinnacle and Max Fleischman and their game plan and forcing the pace of play. We were getting a little frustrated. We have a lot of depth, composure, and leadership from defense to propel us to the win.”

The 22 wins tie the program record for victories.
