Get to Know: Frank Sunderhaus
Frank Sunderhaus is a multi-sport athlete who swims and plays volleyball. As a junior, he qualified for the AIA State Championships in the 50 freestyle (27th, 22.99) and was a member of the Brophy 6A State Championship volleyball team last spring. He hopes to play volleyball in college at a smaller Jesuit school. His brother Kevin is on the swim team.
 
What are you most excited about this swimming season?
“I am so excited to see everyone else swim their best times. They have put so much effort in, and I have put a lot in. I want us to go best times at state and show up with our best foot forward.”
 
What was your AIA State Championship experience like last year, and what are your goals for returning this year?
“My goal performance-wise is to drop time in my 50 free and make the A finals in the state.”
 
What is your swimming history?
“My family has a swim school (Hubbard), so I grew up there. But I did not swim from fifth grade until eighth grade. Then I decided to join the swim team in high school.”
 
What has swimming meant to your Brophy experience?
“It has been amazing and a second family. All my friends swim do swim now, so it is a big part of my life.”
 
You had to recover from an injury during volleyball season. How was the rehab this summer for getting ready for swimming?
“It was 8-10 weeks off from physical activity, and then I did rehab every week.”
 
What was the experience of winning the state championship?
“It was phenomenal. Even though I was not playing, I called myself the bench brothers and led the bench like no one else. We did everything we could to help the team.”
 
What is a fun fact about you?
“I have 29 cousins.”
