Back-to-School Information

Mark Your Calendar: School Starts August 8
A Special Welcome to the Class of 2028!

As we plan for the beginning of school, we would like to extend a warm welcome to our new students and families; it's our hope that the information on this page will help provide a smooth transition to Brophy and the new school year. You can also find information in the letter sent July 17 from Principal Jim Bopp to Class of 2028 families.

The Freshman Experience

Class of 2028, please mark your calendar for these campus events known as The Freshman Experience. They will provide an important introduction to school life and what it means to be Jesuit educated.

The Freshman Retreat: Retreats are an integral part of Jesuit education and will provide some of your most formative experiences. The Freshman Retreat begins that process and is mandatory for all freshmen. Please make sure you have the dates on your calendar.

Brophy Big Brothers will join faculty and administrators in leading these activities.

Freshman Retreat, Sept. 14-15: The Freshman Retreat begins at 10 a.m. and concludes at noon on Sunday. All freshmen are required to participate in the retreat. More details will be provided by the Office of Faith and Justice once school begins.

The Freshman Advisory

Brophy’s Freshman Advisory Program is designed to foster a successful transition for each freshman in all aspects of Brophy life: academic, co-curricular, social and spiritual. Each advisor will be charged with a small group of freshmen for whom his/her primary responsibility is cura personalis. This Latin phrase literally translates to “care of the person” and is a hallmark of Jesuit education.

Freshman will be notified of their advisor assignment in early August and will meet their advisor at orientation on Wednesday, Aug. 7. Find more information here.

    2024-25 Class Schedules

On July TBD, all students received this information from director of scheduling, Mr. Tony Oldani:

Your finalized schedule for the 2024-25 school year is available on myBrophy. To view your schedule, log in to myBrophy and click the progress button, then click the first-semester button to view your classes in that semester. You can click the Semester 2 button to see those classes. The number in parenthesis is the period that the class is scheduled, for example (411) meets during the fourth block.

Before we talk about "error correction" and "elective change requests," some information...
    • Approximately 19% of students received ALL of their requested classes. So most of you did NOT get everything you requested.
    • A "Flex Period" is an open period ON CAMPUS; a "Free Period" allows that student to arrive late (1st/5th) or leave early (4th/7th). Free periods are only available to juniors (only 4th and 7th) and seniors.
    • There are a few seats left in Beginning Drawing, Theatre, 9th Grade Choir and Concert Choir, and a couple of seats in Digital Photo in the spring. The rest of the seats available in the visual arts are in the advanced courses, which have limited offerings each semester. The point is, it is unlikely that you will be able to change your fine art until someone drops a class (which would open a seat). This may also make "filling a flex" more difficult unless you're willing to take another elective such as a religion or English course.

Ok, now the important stuff. This letter contains information regarding the rest of the scheduling process. First, please be aware that schedules are run in order of grade level and course priority. The priority is to schedule students for classes that fulfill graduation requirements, including the placements made by the academic departments in the early Spring. This is done to ensure that by the end of your tenure here, you have enough credits to fulfill requirements and thus graduate on time. The second priority is to schedule students for requested electives. Though we would like students to receive all of their requested electives, there will inevitably be conflicts in the scheduled grid, full classes or other graduation requirements to take that prevent students from receiving all of their requested electives. If you weren’t scheduled for an elective that you requested, the class conflicted with another of the core courses you were placed in or another elective, or the class filled up before your schedule was created. For example, there were over 90 unfilled requests for Ceramics at the time that all of the classes were filled. I promise I did not decide to simply ignore your request. This is especially true with religion, English, and social studies electives, and fine arts classes. The most likely reason you did not get an elective is that it conflicted with another required class or was already full. This is especially the case where we only offer one section of a course (lots of electives and high-level classes here). Finally, please remember that per Brophy’s policy, we will not change schedules for any student based on teacher preference.

As diligent as we are in trying to ensure that each student’s schedule is correct, inevitably some ERRORS arise either in the inputting of course requests or in the scheduling process itself. ERRORS might include:
    • being registered for fewer than seven periods each semester (including flex/free periods).
    • missing a graduation requirement such as a religious studies, English or math class.
    • being enrolled in an incorrect language class/level.
    • having a class on your schedule that you’ve completed over the summer or in a previous school year.
If any of these ERRORS are present in your schedule, please follow the instructions below and we will review your schedule and address the issue accordingly. You and your counselor will be contacted by email as soon as there is a resolution to the issue. Your patience in this process is appreciated as there may be a need to contact other teachers and administrators to resolve your scheduling situation. Additionally, for returning students, all requests for promotion into Honors and AP classes require the approval of the department chair. Placement questions for freshmen will go through the Admissions Office.

Please note that errors do not include receiving elective courses that you didn’t request (i.e. English, social studies, fine arts, or religion electives) or having two courses from the same discipline in the same semester [e.g. U.S. Government and Economics].

If you would like to inquire about the availability of alternate electives or splitting semester courses from the same department, follow the directions below to inquire about the available options. Please note that changes will almost always impact numerous classes. Please do not ask your counselor/advisor or the scheduling office to give you every possible outcome before you decide if you want a change. Finally, counselor approval will be required for all placement changes to ensure that not only graduation requirements are being met, but to also ensure that students don’t jeopardize admission opportunities by neglecting to take appropriate courses for the colleges or universities they hope to attend. Should you wish to appeal to move from a regular-level course to an Honors or AP course, you will need the department chair's approval. This approval should be sent from the chair to the student's counselor/advisor and the scheduling office.

    The Process
If you believe there is an error (see above for definition of ERROR) concerning your schedule:
    • Please email scheduling@brophyprep.org and share your name, student ID number and what you believe the error to be. Include "SCHEDULING ERROR" in the subject line.
    • If you are a returning 10th, 11th or 12th grader, you must copy your counselor on this email as well or your request will be considered incomplete and will not be processed.
    • If you are a freshman, please direct your requests to scheduling@brophyprep.org. The Class of 2028 will receive an email from their advisor in the first weeks of August with an introduction. Until that time, all scheduling questions can be sent directly to the scheduling office; if they include placement questions, the Admissions Office should be copied (sscheuring@brophyprep.org).
    • This is the same process for requesting an optional schedule change, except you'll include "OPTIONAL SCHEDULE CHANGE" in the subject line. Failure to follow these steps will result in your email being deleted. You will then need to resubmit following the appropriate directions. You will also voluntarily put yourself at the end of the schedule change line, greatly limiting the possibility that your request will work.

All schedule change requests will be processed through scheduling@brophyprep.org only.

Students should contact their counselors directly to discuss scheduling options; the scheduling office will not send out possible options and “what-if” scenarios. The Scheduling Office will begin processing these error corrections and optional change requests the week of July 29 when school offices reopen.

  • > Technology Resources/Textbook Information

    For All Parents and Students:
Textbooks and Digital Resources for the 2024-25 School Year

Most student textbooks and resources will be available for download on students’ MacBook Airs at no additional cost when the 2024-25 school year begins; however, for some classes, students will need to purchase a paper textbook through an online retailer. The complete list of textbooks and resources for next year is located here, and is also accessible through myBrophy by going to the “resources” tab and then the “academic information” tile. The list was finalized on June 30, the last day of summer school. This gives students and parents several weeks to acquire any required texts. (There are online links to where purchases can be made for any required hard-copy books/textbooks.)

Note: No books should be purchased unless the course for which it is required is actually on the student’s schedule. If the course is an elective and the student is contemplating a schedule change, please do not purchase the book until his schedule is considered final. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that he has the proper texts and resources for each course he takes.

Schedules will be finalized in mid-July (students will receive an email from Mr. Tony Oldani, the director of scheduling) and made available to students on myBrophy. Email Mr. Mica Mulloy at mmulloy@brophyprep.org with any textbook questions.

    Caring for MacBook Airs
Please talk to your son this summer about how he cares for his computer, encourage good practices and correct any poor habits before they lead to problems. Click here for tips and warranty information.

    Technology Resources Website for Parents
Parents have an online resource for information and tips about technology, screen time and parenting in a digital age. There is a wealth of research, best practices and suggestions available, and many of those resources have been gathered on this site. We encourage parents to explore what is available and talk to their sons this summer about technology use.

    For Freshman Parents and Students
Important: Class of 2028 MacBook Air Pickup and Technology Training
All students from the class of 2028 will pick up their MacBook Air computers and other technology items during Freshman Orientation on Wednesday, Aug. 7. Students will then complete required online training through Canvas, our learning management system. Our technology staff will be working this summer to do the initial setup on each computer so students will pick up a MacBook Air that is pre-assigned to them and largely ready to use.

Students and parents will receive an email from Mr. Mica Mulloy in early August with more information about their computer, account access and training; the email will include a barcode for pickup. Please watch for that email and make sure your son has either an electronic or printed copy of it with him at Freshman Orientation. He will use that barcode to receive his computer.

    ArcheryCoach Scott Wagy
    • Archery tryouts (no experience needed) will be held in September. The exact dates will be shared once school begins.
    • Tryouts consist of introducing prospective archers to the sport, to members of our team and to the coaching staff. Each participant will receive an introduction to archery, safety rules, the season and what to expect. Current team members will go over range rules, and how to shoot a bow safely, and they will give instructions on the basics of the form sequence. Each prospect will then have an opportunity to shoot the bow at our range in the basement of Loyola Hall. This is a time to try out archery to see if you would like to commit to the sport and to the team. It will also be a time for the coaches to gauge your interest and get to know you. We look forward to meeting you.
