This is Fr. Jim Flynn, SJ
Fr. Flynn was the Superior of the Jesuit community when I started here in 2000. I started mid-year and so, because I missed the beginning-of-the-year orientation activities, Jim sort of took me under his wing and we became good friends. Jim loved being a Jesuit; he loved Ignatian spirituality; he loved Brophy; and he loved good food and Gray Goose martinis, not necessarily in that order.
When Jim’s term at Brophy ended, he moved to California and almost immediately was diagnosed with liver cancer. Not only did Jim never have another drop of Gray Goose, I never heard Jim express one word of anxiety or panic even when he was told his cancer was terminal. “Take Lord and receive, all my liberty, my understanding, and my entire will…” We’ve all prayed Ignatius’ Suscipe prayer but I admired the way Jim lived those words during the years before his death.
