Track and Field Wins Devon Allen AMDG Invitational; McHenry Sets Long Jump Record

The Brophy College Preparatory track and field team won the Devon Allen AMDG Invitational on Friday, scoring 7,353 points to edge Hamilton and Sandra Day O’Connor. Senior Brennen McHenry recorded a personal best of 24-4.5 to win the long jump, setting new school, facility, and AMDG Invitational records with the mark.

“We wanted to create an atmosphere where everyone can get their personal best performance,” said Head Coach Bill Kalkman. “Our guys took advantage of the opportunity here at home. It was fun to show where they are at. We had great energy for all the athletes.”

Overall, the Broncos recorded 13 personal bests in the meet.

The meet featured a unique scoring format with each school competing for points in 10 track and field events including the 100m, 110/100m Hurdles, 400m, 800m, 1600m, Long Jump, High Jump, Pole Vault, Shot Put, Discus Throw. The performance marks were scored in decathlon fashion with a point score. Brophy’s scoring athletes were McHenry (LJ, and HJ), Strider Aston (SP and Discus), Zach Loiselle (1600m), Kenoby Hetman (800m), Luca Cannizzo (400m), Hayes Chambers (100m), Cree Thomas (110mHH) and James Chester / Caden Heidrich (pole vault).  Brophy scored more than 700 points in nine of the 10 events.

Two-time Olympian Devon Allen ‘13, the Arizona 110M HH state record holder and a USA Olympian, sponsored the AMDG Invitational to promote Arizona high school track and field. The short hurdle event winners received the Devon Allen 110HH trophy, while the 4x400m relay winners received the Louis Allen Jr. Memorial award. The 300m hurdle event winners received Diadora shoes/gear from Brophy Alum and Arizona HS State record holder Robert Grant ‘14. The featured boys and girls 1600m race champion received an award sponsored by Beynon Sports Surfaces - named after Brophy school record holder and multiple event state track and cross country champion and Brophy Hall of Famer Charles Hampton ‘04.

“It was pretty special that these guys took the time to come back and shared what they loved about sports when they were here,” said Kalkman. “My guess is Devon signed over 500 autographs today and had his Sharpie out non-stop for all the athletes here. It was cool what Devon, Bobby, and Charles were doing tonight.”

McHenry was named the Male Athlete of the Meet after his record-breaking performance in the long jump for 918 points to the team. It tied for the best jump in the nation on Athletic.net rankings.

Junior Hayes Chambers clocked 11.31 in the 100 meters, junior Lucas Cannizzo was seventh in the 400m (51.02). Junior Kenoby Hetman was 16th in the 800 meters (2:06.12), and senior Zach Loiselle placed fifth in the 1600 meters (4:21.85). Sophomore Cree Thomas was fifth in the 110m hurdles (16.11), while sophomore Darius Alberty finished 12th in the 300m hurdles in 43.25. Senior Strider Aston was fourth in the shot put (44-9) and third in the discus 138-1.

McHenry also won the high jump with a 6-8 clearance after recording a school record 7-0 mark earlier in the season. Sophomores James Carter and Caden Heidrich both cleared 9-6 in the pole vault. Freshman Rylan Umphrey had a PR in the long jump with a jump of 22-1.5, while freshman Thatcher Wilson leaped 36-8.5 in the triple jump.

Brophy competes at Notre Dame Prep on Wednesday.
