Baseball’s George Smith to Play at Regis University

Brophy baseball second baseman George Smith has committed to playing baseball and attending Regis University in Denver, Colo. next fall.

“There were a lot of ups and downs in the recruiting process,” said Smith. “But the Regis came out and watched me in the Fall Classic and offered me before I attended their camp. I like the way it felt and the program is big on community and work ethic.”

Smith hit .329 as a junior, the best by a Brophy second baseman in six years, with five doubles, one triple, and one home run, He had 26 hits on the season, the fourth-best total on the team, and ranked second in doubles.

“I had a pretty solid year,” said Smith looking back. “As long as I can increase those numbers. I had a pretty good summer but it all comes down to performance. It is confidence but I just have to lock in.”

Smith will play for Head Coach Pat Jolley, who was named the head coach last spring after helping the team advance to its first RMAC Tournament championship game since 2012 as the team’s hitting coach and recruiting coordinator. The team set program records for runs scored and runs batted in while posting top-five marks for hits, on-base percentage, and stolen bases.

He will join teammate Carson Borges in the Ranger recruiting class.

“It is something I have been working on since seventh grade to play college baseball,” said Smith about playing in college. “It means a lot to me for the work to pay off and the end goal.”

He is one of seven players on the team who have committed to play in college next fall. They have big goals for the upcoming season to leave their mark here at Brophy.

“I have grown up with these guys since freshman ball and JV,” said Smith. “Now we are on the big stage on the varsity team. We have so many returners and I already feel close to this team. It is very exciting.”

Head Coach Josh Garcia ‘07 says Smith’s defensive versatility and offensive production led to this opportunity.

“George is an exceptional second baseman whose competitive spirit is matched only by his work ethic on the field, in the weight room, and in the classroom,” said Garcia. His dedication and commitment to his craft has grown over the past three and half years and it has been a joy to watch George's development. Beyond his skills on the field, George’s sense of humor adds a vibrant energy to the team.”

He will participate in the Brophy Collegiate Signing Celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
