Swimming & Diving Places Third at State Meet; Brubaker Named Coach of the Year

The Brophy swimming and diving team finished third overall at the AIA Division I State Championships on Saturday at the Skyline Aquatic Center. Head Coach Daren Brubaker was named the Division I Coach of the Year after leading the Broncos to the top-three finish behind the strength of three top relay finishes and two podium finishes by senior Theodore Neilson in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard breaststroke.

Brophy opened the meet with a third in the 200-yard medley relay with senior Jackson Douglas, Neilson, freshman Finn Conley, and senior Tristan Oudman. Neilson led a trio in the 200 individual medley “A” final placing third in 1:53.33. Sophomore Mark Heffern was fifth in 1:57.35 and senior Nico Wood was right behind in touching the wall sixth overall in 1:57.63.

Douglas was eighth in the 100-yard freestyle in 48 flat. Sophomore Ashton Joswiak and freshman Patrick Dunn finished fifth and sixth, respectively in the 500 freestyle. The 200-yard free relay was fifth and Douglas returned with a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.82. Wood was an “A” finalist in the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.92 for sixth overall.

Overall, Brophy had 20 finalists on the afternoon among the top 16 finishers.
