Brophy senior wide receiver Christian Camarata has committed to playing and attending school at the University of Chicago. It is a Division III school and is a charter member of the University Athletic Association. The school ranked 12th nationally among 443 institutions in the 2023-24 Learfield Directors' Cup standings.
“The football and academic experience at the University of Chicago is what I have been looking for and working towards in high school,” said Camarata. “To attend a prestigious school and play football in college is everything I wanted, and I am grateful to have the opportunity.”
Camarata continues a pipeline from Brophy to the Chicago, Ill., school, including football alums Josh Minton ‘21 and Chaz Carson ‘24.
“My brother and I both played with Josh Minton, and I played with Chaz,” recalled Camarata. “Being able to talk to them has been great. They both have been super helpful pre- and post-commitment. When I visited, they took care of me. They offered me tons of help for next year and helped in the recruiting process.”
Camarata earned a 2024 All-Central Region honorable mention selection. As a junior, he led the team with 48 catches for 541 yards and four touchdowns, earning 2023 AIA 6A All-Conference honorable mention and Central Region first-team honors.
“I'm not sure we have had a harder worker in our program, ever,” said Head Coach Jason Jewell. “Christian is full speed, all the time—practice, weights, and, of course, in the games. Christian embodies our team-first mentality; he is the consummate teammate, willing to do anything to help the team win, including jumping in on special teams during games and making a play. I couldn't be happier to see Christian accomplish his goal of playing college football at a prestigious academic institution like UChicago. I know he is going to succeed because I know how hard he is going to work.”
Camarata shared the Brophy experience with his younger brother, Gianni ‘28, this year after he followed his older brother, 2021 graduate Jackson, to the school.
“I came to Brophy because it is a great school and community, but I was drawn here because my brother came here,” said Camarata. “Football was huge. It has taught me what it is like to thrive on a team, be a leader, develop a work ethic, and work towards a common goal.”
Camarata, who will study Law Letters and Society at UChicago, says winning the Honor Bowl last year was his favorite memory.
“We proved to ourselves we are good now,” said Camarata. “It showed the first phase of all the work we had done before that season. It was fantastic to travel and was a fun experience to play a good team.”
Camarata will participate in the Brophy Collegiate Signing Day Celebration on Dec. 4.
