Brophy senior wide receiver Nathan Benzie has committed to playing and attending the University of San Diego after making an official visit this past weekend. The Toreros compete in NCAA Division I as a member of the Pioneer Football League.
“I liked the coaches and the environment on my visit,” said Benzie. “They have been consistent throughout the year with their support in the season. They are a winning program, and after a successful career here at Brophy, I want to continue that journey in college. They have created a winning culture, and I am excited to participate.”
Benzie has been a three-year letter winner for the Broncos and was a 2023 and 2024 All-Academic and all-region honorable mention choice. He recorded 34 catches for 417 yards (long of 57) on the season with four touchdowns as a senior, finishing his career with 69 catches for 788 yards and eight touchdowns.
“I loved every second of it, and I love the game,” said Benzie about his time at Brophy. “To be able to go out with my friends and brothers to play football and represent Brophy and my heritage in a way that gave me a platform to excel. It was a special experience, and I loved every second.”
Benzie also participated in basketball and track and field. This season, he participated in the TeenLife Line Message of Hope campaign.
“It took a tremendous amount of hard work and patience, but I am so happy that Nathan finally found his spot and will accomplish his childhood dream of playing division-one football,” said Head Coach Jason Jewell. “There are not many kids who have Nathan Benzie's work ethic. His dedication to the weight room made him a huge force for us over the past two years when he was named all-region twice. He is a high character, passionate, and a good teammate. Nathan set the standard for our young wide receivers.”
Benzie is undecided about his area of study but is interested in business economics. He will play for USD head Coach Brandon Moore, entering his second year after leading the Colorado School of Mines to the Division II National Championship in 2022.
“It means the world to me,” said Benzie. “I have wanted to play college football, specifically Division I football. Making it a reality means the world because I put in much effort, time, and sacrifices. Seeing it pay off to play at USD is a dream come true.”
Benzie lists the 2023 Salpointe win as one of his top Brophy team memories. While he had many top individual performances, he might have saved the best for last. He had 175 receiving yards, three touchdowns, and three passes defended at the Native American All-Star game in Dallas hosted by the Native American Athletic Foundation.
“It was awesome,” said Benzie. “I got to meet many Native athletes and good people and mentors throughout the experience. Seeing the Cowboys’ facilities was surreal.”
Benziel will participate in the Brophy Collegiate Signing Day Celebration on Feb. 5.
