Wrestling Advances Five to State Championships; Jack Sweetman Wins Section Title

The Brophy College Prep wrestling team advanced five wrestlers to the AIA State Championships next week at Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum. Senior Jack Sweetman won the section title at 215 pounds, while junior Adam Angulo was second at 150. Senior Cooper Carey was third at 175, and senior Rowdy Benear and sophomore Landon Jurek placed fourth overall at 175 and 190, respectively.

Sweetman won the section title for the second consecutive season. He won in sudden victory over Michael Hayes of Queen Creek. He was a semifinalist and placed fifth overall in 2024.

Angulo, a state finalist last year, advanced to his third state tournament. He posted two falls and a major decision in his rounds before facing nationally ranked Carlos Stanton of Sunnyside in the first-place match.

Carey advanced to his first state championship by finishing third with a major decision over Jesse Garcia of Cesar Chavez 11-2. He advanced to the semifinals before rebounding in the consolation semifinal to qualify.

Benear advanced in wrestle backs, taking his consolation semifinal over Zavier Bell of La Jolla by decision 16-12. He came back from a 10-1 deficit in the match. He eventually lost the third-place match to Rafael Rodriguez of Queen Creek.

Jurek advanced to the third-place match via a decision over Eric Havier of Desert View before falling to Abraham Kramer of Williams Field via fall.

Other wrestlers comparing at sections included Julian Benavidez at 106, Edson Salas at 113, Beau Wallace at 126, Parker Mickelson at 132, Tanner Dryer at 138 and Shane Reiersgaard at 285.
