Football Wins Dramatic Season Opener at Williams Field

Junior quarterback Rylan Umphrey hit junior Devin Fitzgerald for a 20-yard touchdown with seven seconds left to propel Brophy to a 35-28 win at Williams Field in the season opener.

The Broncos went 76 yards on ten plays to score on their final drive after taking over with 3:22 left in the game. Williams Field had erased a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 28. The final drive included a fourth down run by Case Vanden Bosch with 40 seconds left.

The Broncos rushed for 233 yards on the game, led by Chambers’ 127 yards on 12 carries. 

Umphrey, who was making his first career start, scored on a 20-yard run to end the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. He hit Daylen Sharper on the next drive in the second quarter, scoring on a 37-yard strike. Fitzgerald then caught the first of three touchdowns with 1:04 left in the half for a 21-0 advantage.

Williams Field scored right before the half to cut the deficit to 21-6. They added another score in the third, but Brophy blocked the point after attempt to cut the lead to 21-12. Brophy answered with a one-yard pass to Fitzgerald from Umphrey for a 28-12 lead. 

Umphrey finished 13-for-17 for 132 yards, four touchdown passes with 31 yards, and a touchdown on the ground. Fitzgerald had five receptions for 57 yards and three touchdowns.

Brophy hosts Regis Jesuit (Colo.) on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. The game will be shown on the Varsity Show on YouTube.
