Basketball Advances to  State Championship

The Brophy College Prep basketball team posted a 68-48 win over No. 1 seed Highland to advance to Saturday’s AIA 6A Conference State Championship game at Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum at 2 p.m. The Broncos will seek their first title in school history against No. 11 Mesa, a 56-53 winner over No. 2 Liberty.

No. 5 seed Brophy (18-11) advanced with wins over Apollo (58-50), No. 4 West Point (63-55) and No. 1 Highland. The Broncos won one game in the Open Division bracket over Prescott before falling to top-seed Perry.

Head Coach Matt Hooten will lead his team to the state championship game for the second time in three seasons. In 2023, Brophy lost to Highland in double overtime.

Brophy had four players in double figures on Wednesday, with senior Ayden Madi and junior Daylen Sharper both scoring 17 points. Madi scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half, while Sharper notched 11 of his 17 points in the first.

Brophy led early by two after the first period and seven at the half. But the Broncos quickly extended the lead to double digits in the third, out-scoring the Hawks 18-11.

Senior Luke Wieskamp added 15 in the winning effort, while Ryan Burbach scored 12.
