Brophy javelin school record holder Darius Alberty has committed to attend school and compete for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville next fall. SIUE is an NCAA Division I member of the Ohio Valley Conference.
“Being able to hurdle and throw at SIUE played a big role as I can compete in the events I love the most,” said Alberty. “What stood out to me was the change of scenery from growing up in a place like Arizona. It is a place to escape the heat and have a head coach who used to live in Arizona, built a connection with whom I relate to.”
Alberty is among the top individuals in the state in the javelin and hurdles. He broke the school mark for the javelin several times as a junior, topping at 197 (60.33) at the American JavFest last summer. He has improved each season after starting at 156 as a freshman.
“The most diverse skilled athlete on our Brophy Prep track and field team is Darius Alberty,” said Head Coach Bill Kalkman. “He has excelled to the top in Arizona in the javelin throw, hurdle races, and sprints/relays. Darius was elected to be one of our 2025 team captains. His competitive spirit and leadership, exemplified through modeling excellence, have inspired his teammates to strive for their best. Darius is dedicated to this sport, and his great work ethic has made him one of our improved athletes in our program history.”
He partnered with Will DeSpong, Nero Nuez, and Max Columbus at the Arcadia Invitational to win the Shuttle Hurdle Relay in the third-fastest time in meet history. He has won the individual titles in the 300m hurdles at the Devon Allen Invitational (39.60) and the Becky Mathews Invitational (39.89) and ran a personal-best time at the Arcadia Invitational (39.08). He also ran a best 14.74 in the 110m hurdles in California. He is ranked No. 1 in the state in the javelin and in the top seven in both hurdle events.
“My hurdling has improved a lot, especially in the 110h I have pr'd almost every meet, and with 300h I have stayed within a consistent time range for most meets as well,” said Alberty. “Having competitive teammates like Nero and Will, I feel, is the main reason I have gotten better as well.”
Alberty will compete for Head Coach Marcus Evans and study Mechatronics & Robotic Engineering.
“It means everything,” said Alberty about extending his career in college. “Track and Field is a sport I have done since I was 4 years old, and I have always wanted to compete at the next level, one to better myself as a person and athlete, but also to keep having fun.”
He looks to finish on a strong note in the championship season.
“My final goals for championship season are to break 200ft in Javelin, continue to PR every meet in hurdles as well as breaking 38 flat in the 300h, and for Will, Nero, and I to make finals for the 110 hurdles if not place at state,” said Alberty.
He will participate in the Brophy Signing Day event on Wednesday, April 23.
