Rowing’s Luca Flamino Commits to the University of San Diego

Brophy senior Luca Flamino has committed to rowing at the University of San Diego this fall.

“I selected USD for their Catholic identity, and I liked the school overall,” said Flamino. “I want to study business. The main thing that got me through the door was talking to the coach. I liked the program, and we got to know each other.”

He will work with USD Head Coach Bart Thompson, who took over the program in  2021.

Flamino had injuries in football and wrestling, which led him to try out for the non-contact sport of rowing.

“I enjoy the team,” said Flamino. “It's a nice group of guys, and there's a lot of camaraderie among the guys in the boat. I enjoy the larger boats, and I'm currently in a quad.”

Flamino raced with Jesus Turrieta, Jack Bagby, and Joseph Mansour at the SoCal Cup, finishing fourth in their race (4:41.4). They also paired at the Desert Sprints to place second.

"Luca Flamino possesses a unique athletic talent that would have shone in any sport,” said Head Coach Pete Cannia. “We at Brophy Rowing consider ourselves fortunate that he chose rowing, a sport he is genuinely passionate about.  Luca was responsible for many positive changes to our program and for building a winning culture. He possesses a championship mindset, which has spread to the other members of our Varsity Quad.”

Flamino, who is a member of the Card Game Club, Young Americans for Freedom, and the Cooking Club, along with his teammates, is preparing for the USRowing Southwest Nationals, which will take place outside Sacramento from May 2 to 4.

“We have a good 5K time, and we have been practicing shorter distances,” said Flamino. “It will be great to have an opportunity to race well in Sacramento and show our consistency.”

Participating in a new sport was a challenge, and it has led to a new path for his college career.

“I would have never expected to be rowing in college and being a part of a collegiate team,” said Flamino. “I would not have thought that two years ago, but now it is a good opportunity.”

His coach is happy for him to compete at the next level.

“We can't help but feel a sense of pride for Luca, not just in the victories won but in the character built along the way,” said Cannia. “Luca has left a legacy far greater than medals—he’s inspired a culture of excellence. Now, Luca is taking his athletic talent and competitive drive to the University of San Diego Crew, and we are honored to have been a part of his journey. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors."

He will participate in the Brophy Signing Day event on Wednesday, April 23.
