Senior wrestler Jackson Sweetman has committed to attend school and wrestle at Benedictine College. The Ravens are an NAIA school located in Atchison, Kan.
“I’m excited to start my college career, especially at Benedictine,” said Sweetman. “It’s what I’ve been working for, and I can’t wait to see what it has in store for me. I’ve wrestled since I was four years old, so to get to wrestle in college is something I’ve always been working for.”
Sweetman was named one of two Varsity Most Valuable Wrestlers after he was the runner-up at 215 pounds at the 2025 AIA State Championships.
“Jack Sweetman is a great wrestler, but he is also a team guy,” said Head Coach Wayne Catan. “He rallied the team for every competition. Sometimes that meant getting a pin, which he did many times, but he truly cared about his team. I could count on Jack Sweetman on and off the mat. He will be missed, and he will do great at Benedictine.”
He will wrestle for Gregory Barner and study business, with the goal of attending law school. Benedictine posted a dual record of 6-5 this season while returning to the NAIA National Championships.
“I chose Benedictine because it seemed like the best path to the future I want to have, both academically and athletically,” said Sweetman.
He credits Coach Catan for helping him develop over the years.
“Since freshman year, I have been able to become a lot stronger mentally through wrestling and all its ups and downs,” said Sweetman. “Coach Catan has always been in my corner through it all, and I appreciate him.”
His favorite memory is attending the Freak Show Tournament in Vegas and post weigh-ins at Denny’s and Freddy’s on the return trip.
He will participate in the Brophy Signing Day event on Wednesday, April 23.
