The Brophy volleyball team won the 2024 AIA 6A Conference State Championship with a 3-1 win over top seed and MaxPreps No. 22 Sandra Day O’Connor at Skyline High School. The match scores were 25-22, 24-26, 25-22 and 25-23.
“I could not have scripted how this all would go down any better,” said Oldani, who won and coached his third and youngest child, Connor. “To have it on the last night when one of our sons was playing for us, and he is the guy who gets the last moment, it was a perfect way to end it.”
Senior Connor Oldani, who has signed to play at Grand Canyon University, had the final kill to secure the championship in the fourth set after the Eagles had cut the Brophy lead to 24-23. All four sets were decided by three points or less.
The Broncos had a strong senior class that helped the team to the magical season and title.
“It is such a great senior group,” said Oldani. “We had three seniors who were in their first season, four seniors in the second year, and two seniors who have been here since their sophomore year. Watching how they melded together has been the key to our success. How well they support and love each other and embrace their roles is special, and it will be hard to replace that chemistry.”
It is the fourth state title in school history (1998, 2001, 2006). The Broncos had advanced to four consecutive semifinals but had not reached the finals since 2015. O’Connor had won three matches during the season, but Brophy was on a role, finishing the season with 18 consecutive wins and winning 39 straight sets entering the final.
Brophy defeated Hamilton, Mesa Mountain View, and Perry en route to the title. During the regular season, Brophy won the team titles at the Wolf Howl Invitational and Las Vegas Aggies Classic.
