Wrestling Standout Sean Kennedy Accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy

Brophy senior Sean Kennedy has been accepted to the United States Naval Academy and will join the wrestling program. He was a two-sport standout for the Broncos, earning all-region in diving and wrestling.

“The acceptance to the United States Naval Academy is a significant milestone for me,” Sean expressed with gratitude. “The application process was rigorous, and I am relieved that the waiting is over. I am now eagerly looking forward to the summer training.”

Sean has been a three-year letter-winner and team captain for the Broncos for Head Coach Wayne Catan. He was a two-time recipient of the Chris Franklin Award (2023, 2024) and was named the Most Improved Wrestler in 2023. He qualified for the AIA Division I State Championships twice.

"Sean is a four-year starter,” said Catan. ”He is one of the hardest workers in the wrestling room, leading to qualifying for the state tournament two times. He was voted team captain two times based on his work ethic. He is a well-rounded student-athlete who will be missed very much. The United States Naval Academy coaches are lucky to have him."

Sean also participated on the Brophy swimming and diving team, earning all-region honors and placing 10th in the state in diving in 2023. His favorite Brophy memory is his Kairos retreat. Sean plans to major in engineering.

“What drove me to the Naval Academy is that it is one of the best four-year educations you can get in the world,” said Kennedy. “You have secured a job in the Navy. It has always been a dream of mine.”

Kennedy has dreamt of this opportunity since watching the Navy Seals train at Coronado Island outside San Diego on a family vacation.

He will also join brother Ryan, ‘22, attending West Point.

“Ryan is excited for me,” said Sean. While he is at West Point, we both support each other and are happy to attend the academies. It is exciting.”

Sean will compete for Former national champion and Olympic team member Cary Kolat, who is in his fourth year as the head coach of the Navy wrestling team.
“I am excited about the team aspect of the Naval Academy wrestling program,” said Kennedy. “When I went to the Academy, the coaches were great, the facilities were awesome, and the people were amazing. I am excited to be part of the team.”

Kennedy will participate in the Brophy Spring Signing Celebration on April 24.
