The Brophy track and field team showcased its hurdler depth on the first day of the AIA Open Championships at Mesa Community College. Senior Jack Sebald was a double qualifier, advancing in the 110m and 300m hurdles prelims.
Sebald was fifth in 14.52 in the 110m hurdles and fourth in the 300m hurdles in 38.87. Junior Nero Nuez (7th, 14.61) and junior William De Spong (8th, 14.67) advanced into Saturday’s finals.
The 4x100m relay advanced to the finals with a 41.96 for eighth overall in heats.
Darius Alberty placed eighth in the javelin with a best throw of 172-10 and 11th in the 300m hurdles. Brendon Luke placed 17th in the 300m hurdles in 41.48.
Senior Luca Cannizzo advanced in the 400 meters in fourth overall in 48.32 to earn a chance for a medal on Saturday.
Saturday’s meet with feature finals in the long jump with Rylan Umphrey at 4:30 p.m. and the 4x800m relay opening the running events at 5:45 p.m.
