Cross Country and Track and Field’s Evan Giesecke Commits to Bates College

Brophy senior Evan Giesecke has committed to attending Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, to compete for the school.

“I'm excited to continue my running career with a great program while also receiving a fantastic education,” said Giesecke. “I've improved a ton over the last 18 months, so I'm excited to be able to try to continue this improvement and compete.”

He will compete under the guidance of Head Cross Country Coach Danny Feldman, who also coaches the distance events for the track and field program. The Bobcats compete in NCAA Division III and the New England Small College Athletic Conference, placing fifth at NCAA Regionals last season.

“I chose the school primarily because of the community and location in Maine,” said Giesecke. “Every student I talked to when visiting Bates was very friendly and willing to take time out of their day to help me, which told me a lot about the community there. I chose to compete for the coach and team there because when I talked to the coach, he emphasized recovery and consistency. Coach Borboa talks about the same things that have worked very well for me recently.”

Giesecke had a breakout senior season, posting a personal-best 17:06 at the AIA State Championships. He improved his 5K time by almost nine minutes (26:03) over his four-year career. He recorded personal bests on the track in the 800 (2:05), 1600 (4:29.52), and 3200 (9:49) this season, winning individual titles at the Red Mountain Rampage and Becky Matthews Invitational in the 1600 meters.

“Evan Giesecke is one of our Broncos who has had the greatest development curve,” said Brophy Head Coach Oscar Borboa. “Through his will and perseverance, he has evolved into a highly competitive runner and now collegiate-level student-athlete.”

Giesecke’s improvement is well earned.

“I am very proud of my improvement, especially because it has come in a relatively short amount of time. I didn't break 21 minutes in the 5 K as a junior, but last fall I ran 17:06, and now I run a 4:29 in the 1600m. I don't know of anyone else who has improved this much in this little time, so it makes me very proud.”

He plans to study among a list of potential majors, including physics, math, and earth and climate science.

“Running in college means a lot to me because it proves that all the early mornings and after-school runs in the heat were worth it,” said Giesecke. “Being able to continue my career at the next level has been a goal of mine for a long time, so I am excited to be able to do it. The best part of my day is always hanging out with my teammates and coaches on runs.”

He will participate in the Brophy Signing Day event on Wednesday, April 23.
