Swimming & Diving Wins AMDG Invitational

On Saturday, the Brophy swimming and diving team won its third invitational title with 524 points. Patrick Dunn won the 500 freestyle in 4:41.09, and the Broncos closed the meet with a win in the 400-meter free relay in 3:14.61 with Asher Gomez, Mark Heffern, Finn Conley, and Thomas McCauley. The Broncos recorded six second-place finishes and eight top-three performances overall.

“The biggest thing for this weekend was figuring out relays and who our four guys will be,” said Head Coach Daren Brubaker. “We have an understanding of who is going to go to state and what we are going to do for the state championship. We just have to see who is going to step up.”

Brophy also won the Brophy-Xavier and Craig Cummins Invitational titles.

Senior Frank Sunderhaus closed the 200-free relay that touched the wall second overall and was third in the 50 free (22.47) and fifth in the 100 free (50.14).

“Frank is dialed in,” said Brubaker. “He is a multi-sport athlete who won a state title in volleyball. He has that DNA and he is a DAWG. He is going for it. He stepped up in the relays and went a personal-best time in the 100 free. We are sharpening him up and he deserves to be swimmer of the meet.”

Finn Conley placed second in the 200 individual medley and helped the 400-free relay win. Grady Garbarino placed second in the 1200 fly (55.43). Other runner-up finishes included Thomas McCauley in the 100 free (49.20) and John Scholz in the 100 backstroke. Dunn was second in the 200 free to go with his win in the 500 free.
