Track and Field Opens at Red Mountain Rampage

Senior Will DeSpong won both hurdle events among four Red Mountain Rampage Friday event winners. DeSpong won the 110m hurdles in 14.43 and the 300m in 39.11. Senior Brendon Luke won the seeded 110m hurdles in 15.99, while senior Evan Giesecke won the seeded 1600m in 4:43.16.

The Broncos were strong in the hurdles behind DeSpong, taking four top spots in the 300m hurdles. Senior Darius Alberty was second with a personal best (39.29), Luke was fourth (40.25), and senior Nero Nuez was fifth (41.97). In the 110m hurdles, Nero Nuez was third (15.06) and Alberty fourth (15.17).

Colin St. Hilaire was third in the seeded 800m in 2:05.64.

Sophomore Garrett Larson was fifth in the Elite 400m (51.34) and ninth in the Elite 200m (22.65) in a personal best.

Four freshmen made their high school debuts in the meet. Jake Shaff was seventh in the 400m Elite race in 52.61, the second-best mark by a freshman to only Devon Allen in school history. He also was 11th in the 200m in 23.57, while Julian Ferrari was 14th in 23.68. Both times ranked in the all-time freshman top-10. Alex Swiergol was 13th in the Seeded 400m, and Benner Niemoth was 20th in the Seeded 1600m.
