Brophy lacrosse senior midfielder Ben Geist has committed to playing lacrosse and attending Oberlin College in Ohio, which is part of the Division III North Coast Athletic Conference.
“I chose Oberlin because I have a lot of family in Ohio, and it is a great school,” said Geist. “It has a strong lacrosse program. I loved the visit, and the facilities and campus were beautiful. There is no other place I would rather be.”
Geist, who will study either economics or political science, will play for Head Coach Ryan Polak, who has led Oberlin to 30 wins over the last three seasons and two NCAC Tournament appearances. An offensive-minded coach at heart, Polak’s offense finished with the second-best man-up offense in the NCAC and eleventh-best in Division III.
Geist will bring his winning resume to Oberlin, including two Arizona State Championships following his sophomore and junior seasons.
“It has been great being a part of a historic, winning program and cool being a part of the championship teams,” said Geist. “The seniors last year have elevated our program to one of the best in the West Coast. “
He scored twelve goals as a junior with 20 ground balls.
“Ben Geist has committed to Oberlin College, where he will continue to showcase his strength as a downhill dodger and athleticism in the middle of the field,” said Head Coach Pat Harbeson. “Ben offers a unique skill set that most players in Arizona do not have. He is exceptionally athletic and can run by anyone with his speed. Ben has played a vital role as a midfielder, and now, in his senior year, he will be asked to play a more significant role as a leader and key contributor. Lastly, Ben has been one of the most enjoyable players to coach, constantly seeking opportunities to grow on and off the field.”
Geist’s recruiting interest picked up after the summer following his sophomore year, after he attended several showcases. His love of the game grew from playing three years for the Brophy program, including the last two on the V1 squad.
Hew is looking forward to joining his future squad in the fall and welcomes the discipline of participating in an NCAA sport. Until then, he focuses on preparing for the upcoming spring season and helping the team compete for a fourth state title.
“I look forward to being a huge impact player on the VI team,” said Geist of his goals. “I am excited to compete for another championship.”:
Geist is setting the example for his brother Jonah, who has played soccer and dove for the Broncos in the state championships this fall.
“It is fantastic having my brother on campus, who is also a great athlete,” said Geist.
Geist will participate in Brophy’s Collegiate Commitment Celebration on Nov. 13.
