Basketball's Luke Wieskamp Commits to Menlo College

Basketball senior Luke Wieskamp has committed to play at Menlo College in Atherton, Calif. The Oaks play in the Division II Pacific West Conference.

“I liked the coaching staff and players when I visited,” said Wieskamp. “I love the campus and area. They have a good business program. It means a lot to me to have the opportunity to play in college. It is something I have dreamed about since I was a little kid. I want to play the sport as long as I can.”

Wieskamp, a 6’6” wing, will play for Head Coach Brendan Rooney, who enters his fourth season at Menlo College after two consecutive seasons posting 16 or more wins.

Coach Rooney and his staff discovered Wieskamp during the summer recruiting season at the Section 7 and CaliLive events.

Wieskamp played his first season at Brophy as a junior after transferring from Muscatine High in Muscatine, Iowa.

“I loved it,” Wieskamp said of his first season. “It is a new program for me, and I am getting used to it. I love the school and all the people.”

Wieskamp averaged 6.0 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 45 percent from the field. He helped the Broncos reach the AIA Open Division quarterfinals with a season-high 20 points in the win over Desert Vista in the Open playoffs.

“Luke quickly impacted our basketball team,” said Head Coach Matt Hooten.  “His unselfish playing style, toughness, and versatility on both ends of the floor helped him to become one of only three players on last year’s varsity team to start every game. Defensively, Luke can guard any position on the floor, and he is often assigned to guard the opposition's best wing or forward scoring threat. He is similarly versatile on the offensive end, where he is a threat to score both inside and on the perimeter. We’re excited to see Luke continue his journey at Menlo College next year!”

Now, he is focusing on the upcoming season that starts Dec. 3.

“I want to be the best defensive player I can be,” said Wieskamp. “It was a role I took on throughout the summer. I want to be more effective offensively and continue working to get stronger and faster. I have a good frame, but being stronger would greatly improve my game.”

Wieskamp will participate in Brophy’s Collegiate Commitment Celebration on Nov. 13 with teammate Ryan Burbach (Cornell University).
