Get to Know: Baseball's Charlie Hazen

Charlie Hazen has been a four-year member of the program and a returning varsity letter winner. He has committed to play at Tufts University in Boston. He plans to study biology.

What are your goals for the season?
“My biggest goal is to have fun. I want to enjoy the last season. We have a great group of guys and teammates. My main goal is to have fun with them and make as many memories as I can before heading off to college.”

What are looking forward to about your commitment to Tufts University?
“It has been a dream of mine to play collegiate baseball. Combined with being in the Boston area with a lot of my family, it is something that excites me and something I am looking forward to. It is such a good school.”

What was your Power Breakfast experience as a speaker like?
“It was nerve-wracking being up there. It was the first time I had reflected on my four years at Brophy in my talk and what has made all the difference for me as a part of the baseball program. It was a nice experience to share it with everyone.”

Growing up in baseball with your Dad’s job, what has been one of the coolest benefits?
“Being able to see the culture they have created in person. It is really easy to look at baseball as a business and they are doing it for the money.  To see it in person in the bonds they are creating and how much fun they are having. The joy that emulates from the dugout is fun to witness being with my Dad and being close to those guys.”

What is your takeaway from the Dbacks World Series?
“Anyone can make it to the World Series and anyone can win it. We were counted out at the beginning of the year and we made it to the World Series. There is no limit to how far you can go with the love and brotherhood in the dugout.”

What does it mean to have two of your brothers on campus with you and share baseball?
“It is pretty awesome to see them all the time in the hallway and on the baseball field. It is an awesome experience.”

How have you improved in anticipation of the season?
“I have been working in the cage and on my catching non-stop. I have to fill a big hole with Lucas being gone. I want to take it personally and step up for my teammates. I am getting ready to be the best player I can be this year.”

Tell us about the Brophy pitching staff and what you are looking forward to this year.
“Every single arm is a dangerous arm. There are a lot of good guys who want to win in our pitching arsenal. It is so fun catching guys like that because you know they are putting their all in every single pitch.”

What is the takeaway from the time in Flagstaff and the baseball retreat?
“The biggest takeaway is that we love each other. On the baseball field, when a team is connected and loves each other, they are unstoppable. I think it is what we have built this year. We talked a lot about it in Flagstaff and we are going to translate it into the game.”
